Synopsis:

Data acquisition and data transmission technologies (DAQT) are introduced together with their principles and typical applications. ISO/OSI model for distributed system is explained and basic characteristics of physical (metallic, optical and radio) communication channels are provided. Intelligent transducers are introduced and basic data transmission models are explained. Simple communication interfaces are described as well as more complex fieldbus and computer network standards (both the wired and the wireless) that are used for the DAQT applications. Basic information is also provided about the systems installation and exploitation including their EMC.

1. Introduction, categorization of DAQT systems

2. Metallic, optical add wireless media, particular types, features, application parameters

3. Centralized and distributed DAQT systems, features, advantages in particular application classes, intelligent transducer, IEEE 1451 standard

4. Categorization of DAQT applications (control systems, continuous processing, geographically wide systems, data acquisition from utility meters, in-vehicle communication networks ), their specific requirements and limits

5. ISO/OSI model, layer functionality, data transmission types, channel capacity sharing

6. Interconnecting of distributed systems, Server-Client, Producer-Consumer, VFD (Virtual Field Device) concept

7. Basic DAQT technologies - analog interfaces, EIA-232, EIA422, EIA-423, EIA-485; industrial distributed systems X computer networks - features, differences, typical applications

8. Industrial distributed systems 1 - overview of standards, their features and application parameters

9. Industrial distributed systems 2 - overview of standards, their features and application parameters

10. Computer networks (focused on IEEE 802.3) for DAQT, variants and features, network infrastructure components, determinism of communication, specific DAQT protocols

11. Modems (PSTN, GSM, PLC, RF), principles, DAQT applications, limits for use in particular application classes

12. Wireless DAQT systems 1 - IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX), principles, DAQT applications, limits for use in particular application classes

13. Wireless DAQT systems 2 - IEEE 802.15 (Bluetooth, ZigBee), RFID, principles, DAQT applications, limits for use in particular application classes

14. Centralized DAQT systems - brief overview of standards and their features
