Department of Radioelectronics
Synopsis:

Students will get acquainted with the following mutually closely related areas of digital communications. (1) Information theory forms a theoretical background for the digital communications. The course focuses on the source and channel coding and the communication channel capacity. (2) Channel sharing in the multiuser channel with the emphasis on CDMA/SDMA. (3) Diversity and adaptive systems. (4) Channel coding. Block, convolutional, turbo and space-time codes are comprised including decoding algorithms.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Information theory - basic principles, entropy, mutual information.

2. Elements of source coding.

3. Channel coding. Channel capacity - Shannon capacity, nonergodic capacity.

4. Channel capacity - discrete, AWGN, multi-input/multi-output channel

5. Channel sharing (CDMA, FDAM, TDMA, SDMA). Capacity and coding for Multiple Access and Broadcast.

6. Diversity communication systems. Diversity gain.

7. Adaptive communication systems. Capacity and adaptation algorithms for adaptive systems.

8. Mathematical theory of coding. Galois fields.

9. Block codes - Hamming, cyclic.

10. Block codes - BCH, Reed-Solomon.

11. Convolutional codes.

12. Signal space coding. Trellis codes TCM.

13. Concatenated codes. Turbo codes. Iterative decoding.

14. Space-time coding for MIMO channel - block STBC, trellis STTC and layered STLC codes.
