Synopsis:

In this set of lectures we will look at the subject of Bionics from a modern, practical perspective. We will witness some of the historical research that has been undertaken and will look not only at the subject as it stands, but also where it is heading now and in the future. In the set of lectures there will be covered following issues: Bionics - introduction, incl. RFID and Heart Pacemakers, Bionic Body Parts - Artificial Organs, Animal (non-human) experiments, Artificial Hands and Legs, Deep Brain Stimulation, Parkinson Disease and Epilepsy. Advance in Bionics is closely related to problems of animal experimentation and human enhancement, which are sensitive from an ethical viewpoint. It is felt appropriate therefore that the final lecture attempts to unravel some of the complex ethical issues involved.
