The course provides an overview of mobile networks 3G. The goal of the course is to closely describe the UMTS network architecture and mechanisms use in the systems. The course as well details architecture and features of cdma and depicts future development of mobile networks.

1. Generation of mobile networks. Standards.
2. Network architecture of UMTS. Functions of network elements. Frequency bands. Modes. UMTS services.
3. Types and principles of UMTS handovers. Power control.
4. Physical layer - basic terms (scrambling, spreading, etc.)
5. Protocol architecture of the UMTS radio interface
6. UMTS channel concept. Structure of channels and their use.
7. Mechanisms of protocol RLC. Type and structure of protocol units.
8. Mechanisms of protocols PDCP, BMC, RRC.
9. Data transmissions in UMTS.
10. HSDPA in UMTS.
11. UTRA TDD mode. Physical layer. Basic layer procedures.
12. HSUPA in UMTS Future development of UMTS. Systems 4G.
13. Systems cdma (cdmaOne, etc.). Basic features.
14. System cdma2000. Structure. Protocols. Types of channels and their structures.

By completing the course the student obtains a deep knowledge of UMTS/HSPA and LTE systems (network architecture, protocol architecture and basic procedures).
