- Synopsis:

Main groups of engineering materials and their characteristics. Mechanical, physical, chemical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, metallic glasses, and composites. Classification and designation of materials according to EN. Material and its role in the engineering design of a technical object. Selection of material with respect to utility properties. Typical applications of materials in power engineering, transportation, chemistry, electrical engineering and biomedicine.

1.Basic group of technical materials and characteristics of their properties. Method of optimal selection of material for a given purpose
2.Materials for fossil fuel power engineering units
3.Materials for supercritical-pressure light-water-cooled reactors (SCLWR) for nuclear power plants
4.Selected applications in chemical and foodstuffs industries
5.Modern metallic materials for applications in transportation
6.Use of composites in aerospace and automotive industries
7.Biomedical applications of metallic and non-metallic materials
8.Materials with special physical properties for use in electrical engineering
9.Significance of surface layers and coatings for applications in aggressive environments
10.Extensive use of structural polymer materials
11.Use of materials produced by powder metallurgy
12.Advanced structural ceramics
13.Use of advanced limit state materials (nanomaterials, metallic glasses, memory-shape effect)
- Syllabus of tutorials:

Selection of material for a given part, subassembly, tool, selection of material for a pressure vessel. Use of LBB (leak-before-break) criterion for selection, high-temperature corrosion in gas. Checking use of material for particular applications in a high-temperature oxidizing environment, evaluation of continuously stressed structural plastics, biocompatibility test - growth of cellular population on pyrolitic carbon. Excursion.
