Synopsis:

Phases of airplane design. Lay-out design. Mass analysis. Essential design parameters. Propulsion unit. Design of essential airplane parts. Assessment of performance, stability and control. Optimization of design parameters based on performance and handling qualities.

Requirements:

Completing the courses: Low Speed Aerodynamics, High Speed Aerodynamics, Mechanics of Flight.

Syllabus of lectures:

Phases of airplane design.

Lay-out design.

Introductory assessment of airplane mass.

Essential design parameters.

Propulsion unit.

Mass analysis. Centre of gravity.

Assessment of performance parameters.

Design of essential airplane parts (wings, fuselage, tail units).

Assessment of stability and control.

Optimization of design parameters from the analysis of performance and handling qualities (airfoils, wing plan form, high lift devices, control surfaces, undercarriage, propulsion unit).

Specific features of high speed airplanes.
