Synopsis:

The aim is to explain the energy transformation processes within different aircraft propulsion systems and to analyze the system in such way to determine primary key design parameters which have fundamental influence on the total efficiency of energy transformation and thus overall fuel consumption for given thrust and flight air speed.

Requirements:
Syllabus of lectures:

1. Introduction to the powered flight, operational envelopes and standard atmosphere, aircraft performance, thrust and needed engine power

2. Aircraft propulsion principles, basic equations, thrust production, energy transformations within propulsion system, energy requirement for thrust production, internal and external efficiency of a propulsion system.

3. Propeller, propeller analysis, flow model, idealized momentum theory. Blade element theories, momentum - blade element theories, Vortex theories. Propeller operational characteristics.

4. Thermal engine, physical principle, application of thermodynamic laws, thermal cycle and useful work and thermal efficiency.

5. Piston engines and their internal characteristics, supercharging and turbo-charging, operational characteristics of supercharged and turbocharged piston aero-engines.

6. Piston engine - propeller propulsion unit external operation characteristics analysis

7. Turbine engines, main components, thermal cycle and its characteristics, useful work and thermal efficiency as a function of total pressure and temperature ratio.

8. Turbojet engine and turboprop engine as an aircraft propulsion unit, internal and external efficiency, energy transformation processes, useful propulsive work, fuel consumption analysis

9. Bypass turbojet engines, separated exhaust streams and mixed flow exhaust streams, thermal cycle analysis, internal and external efficiency

10. Operational internal and external characteristics of gas turbine engines propulsion

11. Ram jets, Scram jets, thermal cycles, construction schemes, operational characteristics

12. Rocket engines, principles, theoretical fundamentals, chemical and electrical rockets, operational characteristics

13. Bypass ratio and its optimization with respect to the flight velocity. New propulsion concepts, High bypass ratio, Prop-fan, ducted fan, electrically driven propulsion, fuel cells, alternative fuels.

14. Environmental considerations of aircraft propulsion. Exhaust emissions, noise production
