Synopsis:

Diffraction methods : x-ray and electron diffraction (for phase analysis, for assessment of residual stresses, textures and lattice imperfections). Imaging methods : optical and electron microscopy (specimen preparation and imaging characteristics, contrast theory). Advanced physical methods of imaging and chemical microanalysis : scanning electron microscopy (secondary, backscattered, absorbed electrons and IBEC). Electron-probe microanalysis : wavelength and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, quantitative microanalysis, signal processing.
